AUSAID AUSTRALIA AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR LATIN AMERICA

Australia's international development assistance in Latin America aims to help overcome poverty through economic development.

Australia's international development assistance is managed by AusAID and focuses on areas of greatest need and where Australia can make a difference, such as food security, rural livelihoods, climate change and natural resource management.

The Australia Awards Scholarships provided under the Australia Awards are a core part of Australia’s development assistance in Latin America aligned with these priority sectors. The aim to provide awardees with the necessary skills and knowledge in Australia to drive change and influence economic and social development of their home country when they return.

These scholarships aim to overcome the lack of human resources in specific development sectors identified as priorities:

These correspond to long-term scholarships that give the applicants the opportunity to obtain post-graduate qualifications from Australian universities and tertiary institutions.

The next intake opens 1 February, 2013 (to begin studies in 2014). Approximately 90 scholarships will be offered to Latin American applicants at the Masters by coursework or research, and PhD level.

AusAID will assess applicants for their professional and personal qualities, academic competence and most importantly their potential to impact on development outcomes in Latin America.

AusAID offers scholarships based on merit, transparency and an equal opportunity for applicants to gain a place. That is why we strongly encourage applications from women, people with disabilities and members of ethnic minorities.

Since the beginning of the program in 2010 to this day, 156 Latin Americans have been benefited with the Australia Awards Scholarships.

Leadership for Development Program

The 200 most outstanding recipients that applied for the Australia Awards Scholarships will be offered a place in the Australia Awards Leadership Program. This program is an additional benefit of the Australia Awards Scholarships. There is no independent application process.

The program will call scholarship students in Australia to receive training in leadership related topics, participate in debates on development, and by doing this obtain the opportunity to build valuable contact networks.

These scholarships are awarded to applicants based on their professional and personal qualities, their academic performance, and most importantly, their potential to impact on development outcomes in their country or region. For more information regarding this program, click here.
