Description/objectives:
The mining sector plays a major role in the Australian and Chilean economies, accounting for over half of the exports from both countries. In the period following the global mining boom, managers from both countries face a new set of challenges – how to cope with softening global demand, lower ore grades and productivity growth. Other considerations include the growing need for greater community consultation and increased demand for energy and water (examined in more detail in the Energy and Water Management sessions).

The ability of the industry to adapt to these challenges and utilise innovative approaches will determine how it succeeds in this new global operating environment. Mines of the future will explore medium and long-term prospects for the Chilean and Australian mining industries, including opportunities for collaboration in the area of innovation to improve productivity and safety, as well as boosting investment in human capital through training and education.
