Addressing energy challenges, boosting investment and developing new energy projects.
Description/objectives:
The Chilean energy sector faces important challenges in the years ahead. Rising energy demand, fed by population growth and industrial development, is prompting a growing need for new investment in generating capacity. The Chilean Government estimates that the electricity grids in central and northern Chile will require around 450 MW of new capacity annually to satisfy industrial and domestic consumers.
In response to this challenge, the Chilean Government has established the National Energy Agenda to develop a long-term strategy that will reduce Chile’s reliance on energy imports while meeting the requirement for new generating capacity. Strong domestic demand and a push to diversify Chile’s energy matrix and increase competition offer exciting new opportunities for investors.
This session will explore the many issues facing development of Chile’s energy market, including practical approaches to:
•
Attract investment in new generation to meet the infrastructure deficit
•
Encourage community engagement and consultation to facilitate planning and approval of new projects
•
Assess the role of LNG and shale gas in Chile’s energy mix
•
Promote energy efficiency to reduce consumption
•
Diversify power generation to include small-scale hydroelectric, wind, solar, geothermal and marine energy
