For the last three decades, foreign direct investment has been an essential contributor to Chile’s economic development. Chile's open economy and market-oriented policies have created significant opportunities for foreign businesses to participate in the country's economic growth through trade and investment.
Australia likewise relies heavily on trade and foreign investment to support its robust and open economy. Trade and investment create jobs, open up commercial opportunities and raise living standards.
Traditionally, Australia and Chile have focused on their immediate regions and traditional partners in building cross-border economic relationships. However, there is tremendous scope for both countries to look one another to enhance trade and investment opportunities across the Pacific. This is particularly critical for Chile and its Latin American partners as the engine of world growth shifts increasingly towards the Asia-Pacific region.
There are opportunities for Australian and Chilean companies and investors not only to target each other’s markets, but to use both countries as platforms for broader trade and investment into Asia and Latin America. In this respect, the Pacific Alliance offers a highly promising vehicle for enhancing engagement across the Pacific. As an active observer of the Pacific Alliance, Australia is a strong supporter of this newly emerged, commercial initiative.
The Pacific Alliance has achieved much since its inception, including through tariff elimination, enhanced movement of business people, and cooperation on education, trade and investment. This session will explore the future challenges for the Pacific Alliance in strengthening its relationship with the Asia-Pacific and the role of Australia and Chile as gateways for trade and investment in their respective regions.
