Ricardo Lagos, President of the Republic of Chile between 2000 and 2006. In the 1980’s he led the Democratic Alliance and the Independent Committee for Free Elections. Founder and first president of the Party for Democracy.

He was Minister of Education during Patricio Aylwin’s administration (1990) and Minister of Public Works in Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle´s administration (1994).

Attorney-at-law from the University of Chile and Ph.D. in Economics from Duke University. He has received the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from prestigious universities worldwide, such as the Autonomous University of Mexico, the University of Salamanca, among other universities. He was awarded the “Berkeley Medal”, the maximum award granted by University of Berkeley at California. He was president of the Club of Madrid and special envoy of the United Nations for Climate Change.

He is currently visiting professor at Brown University in the US and President of Fundación Democracia y Desarrollo in Chile.

Ricardo Lagos was born on March 2, 1938, is married and has 5 children and 7 grandchildren.
